The Equity Awards were introduced in 2011 to honour excellent performances by television ensembles.

In the lead up to the Equity Awards, all Australian performers are invited to nominate a television cast who they believe deserves recognition for their work on Australian drama, mini-series or comedy program. Winners are then selected by Actors Equity members.

The Equity Awards include:

*The Equity Award for an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in Comedy Series

*The Equity Award for an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

*The Equity Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Mini-series or Telemovie

The Equity Lifetime Achievement Award was launched in 2009 to honour the achievements of a leading Australian performer who has had a distinguished career and been an inspiration to other Australian performers.

Prior to the award ceremony, Equity members are invited to nominate an Australian performer who they feel should be honoured with the Equity Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Foxtel. Winners are then selected by members of the National Performers Committee.

In 2009 Peter Carroll was awarded the inaugural Equity Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010 Bob Hornery was awarded the Equity Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011 the Award was received by Maggie Dence.
