The Casting Hothouse, Equity’s unique intensive audition/casting workshop to maximise skills and employment outcomes in the local and international market, is returning in September and October 2017.
The Australian Casting Hothouse will take place in Brisbane over two and half days from Saturday September 30 to Monday October 2, 2017.
The Hothouse is a major initiative by Equity to give members an opportunity to develop the skills and confidence to tackle the US and Australian casting experience head on. It is NOT designed to assist Australian actors to leave Australia permanently. Rather it is an opportunity to equip these actors with the tools to work overseas as well as home and to show overseas companies that Australia has a professional talent pool. It will assist these performers to maintain a long lasting career.
READ THE DETAILS BELOW AND THEN APPLY HERE. APPLICATIONS CLOSE AUGUST 10.
HOW IT WILL WORK
Two US casting directors and an Australian casting director will host the Australian workshops.
60 performers will be allocated into three groups of 20 and the casting directors will issue scripts, film mock auditions, look at reading techniques, provide feedback and give the participants the skills to handle the pressure and get them through the whole experience unscarred. All performers will work with all the casting directors.
The intensity and length of the classes will ensure that the training and skills development is hard wired into them and their audition and casting skills become instinctive.
The Australian Casting Hothouse will commence on Saturday September 30th with a US accent workshop and an In Conversation with the casting directors in the evening. Sunday October 1 will commence at 10am and finish by 5.30pm with drinks to follow and Monday October 2nd will commence at 10am and finish by 2pm.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
There are only 60 places available. It will be open to financial members of Equity. Attendees are selected by random ballot. Previous Hothouse attendees can re-apply.
This is a big investment from Equity with major support from Screen Queensland, Foxtel and Showcast so only participants who are able to fully commit to the two and a half days should apply. The agenda of the two and a half days has been carefully designed to ensure 60 members get maximum exposure to all opportunities so attending for only part of the time is not possible.
This is the first year we have held the Hothouse in Brisbane so we encourage Queensland actors to apply.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is it open to non-members?
No – it is only open to financial members of Equity.
Is it open to actors outside of Brisbane?
Yes – this is a national initiative so members from all over Australia are encouraged to submit an application. Unfortunately Equity is not in a financial position to cover the costs of flights or accommodation for performers who are attending the workshop from outside of Brisbane.
Is there a minimum age for applicants?
Yes. You must be 18 years or over to attend the Casting Hothouse.
What is the selection process?
Selection is by ballot.
Does it cost anything?
Attendance is free of charge for financial members of Actors Equity.
Do I need to prepare anything?
You will be using a US accent in at least two of the workshops. Also – you will be sent scenes in the weeks in advance to learn and prepare. You will also be given the opportunity to refresh your US accent at the three hour afternoon class the day prior to the workshops.
Will I be filmed?
Yes you will be filmed in at least two of the workshops and the casting director will keep these for their reference. Unfortunately we aren’t in a position to offer anyone copies of their filmed scenes.
Do I have to stay for the whole Hothouse?
Yes you do. This is a big investment from Equity with major support from Screen Queensland, Showcast and Foxtel and only participants who are able to fully commit should apply. The agenda has been carefully designed to ensure the attendees get maximum exposure to all opportunities so attending for only part of the time is not possible.
Will lunch and afternoon tea be provided?
Lunch will not be provided but fruit and juice will be available. There will be networking opportunities at the drinks following the workshops.
Please note: There is no fee for this workshop but applicants need to be able to commit to the full three days. Our limited resources are being directed into ensuring you have the best possible professional program. This means that we are unable to assist with travel or accommodation costs so all delegates will need to find their own way to Brisbane and organise their own accommodation. Venue restrictions also prevent us providing lunch so delegates will need to be able to provide their own. There will be networking opportunities with drinks on the Saturday and Sunday nights.
