The Equity Professional Program

The Equity Foundation hosts more than 100 events a year throughout Australia and New Zealand. The program is developed in close collaboration with performers.

Masterclasses
The Equity Foundation's masterclasses are designed to address our members’ need for ongoing professional development and provide rare opportunities to work with leading directors, coaches and casting agents.
Workshops
Our workshop series is an opportunity to work on specifics, such as acting for the camera, comedy, dancing, voiceovers and accents. Up to 10 members work over a two-hour period with an expert in their field.
In Conversation
As part of the foundation’s In Conversation series, performers are given the opportunity to attend an intimate question and answer session with leading international actors and directors. Sir Ian McKellen, Richard E Grant, Sam Neill, and Cate Blanchett are among those who have participated in the In Conversation events.
Casting Hothouse
Each year the Equity Foundation hosts a Casting Hothouse, which gives performers a unique opportunity to work with international casting agents, such as CBS TV Studios’ vice president of casting Matt Skrobalak and US feature film casting director Margery Simkin.
Student Days
We know how difficult it can be getting a toehold in the entertainment industry, so each year the Equity Foundation holds an industry day designed to provide graduates with important information and tools to help them on their way to a successful performance career.

Event description:

The starving artist is a pervasive idea, and in reality lots of creative people struggle in self-¬employment because money is a constant battle. This isn’t always just due to lack of funds, however – actors sometimes just need the basics of financial literacy explained in a way that makes sense. This not-scary three hour workshop helps actors answer some of the biggest financial questions they might have:
• How do I weather the ups and downs of creative income?
• How do we manage our spending?
• Do I have to keep working for free?
• What should I charge?
• Where can I go for help?
All participants are also given access to a Dropbox full of extra information, plenty of free resources and the chance to have four hours of free creative business advice through the NSW Business Connect program.

Bio of host:
Monica Davidson is an award-winning expert on the creative industries, who began her creative life as a freelance journalist and filmmaker before starting a film production company in the early 90s. Her experience highlighted how desperately unprepared creative people can be for a life of entrepreneurship. Monica decided to use her expertise to help other creative practitioners develop and improve their business skills, and now she works with individual practitioners and larger organisations as a business advisor, strategic consultant and workshop facilitator. She focuses on goal setting, business and strategic planning, financial literacy and understanding markets. Monica is a regular guest lecturer at institutions including AFTRS, NIDA, NAVA and Ausdance, and she is the author of the Australian version of Freelancing for Dummies. In 2013 Monica was appointed as the first NSW Creative Industries Business Advisor through SmallBizConnect, and the following year she completed her Masters Degree in Screen Business at AFTRS. In 2015 Monica was named as one of the Westpac 100 Women of Influence for her work in the creative industries. Her award-winning company Creative Plus Business Group recently joined the City of Sydney Creative Spaces project, and in 2017 Monica and the team were proud to join the NSW Department of Industry Business Connect program as creative industries specialists for the whole state.
