Sapphires shine at Cannes

on .

Australian feature film The Sapphires – starring Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens – received a standing ovation when it screened at Cannes in May.

The musical comedy, based on the true story of an Indigenous girl band, had its world premiere at a midnight gala screening on May 19 and received ''a 10-minute standing ovation'' according to Forbes.com's Roger Friedman.

“The precedents are good,” wrote Michael Bodey inThe Australian. “Both Strictly Ballroom and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert premiered in out-of-competition gala screenings at Cannes in 1992 and 1994 respectively.”

The film has been picked up by The Weinstein Company, the US distributor behind The Artist andThe King’s Speech.  It will be released in Australia on August 9 after opening the Melbourne International Film Festival.
