Synopsis

A rare chance to hear from the artistic directors of two of Australia's most reputable theatre companies - Matthew Lutton (Malthouse Theatre) and Courtney Stewart ( La Boite) - and ask them any questions you may have. Matthew and Courtney will talk to Australian actor Veronica Neave about navigating an acting career in theatre, their journey from directors to cultural leaders while unpacking the actor/director relationship, casting, the rehearsal process, the current theatrical landscape and much more.  There will be plenty of time for audience questions. Don't miss out on the chance to gain exclusive insights from two seasoned industry leaders, as they reveal the inner workings of what really goes on in a theatre company!   • Courtney Stewart

    Courtney Stewart is an acclaimed director, dramaturg, actor and teaching artist with a deep passion for intercultural works and multicultural dramaturgies. She is the current Artistic Director and CEO of La Boite Theatre. A proud Queenslander, Courtney started her professional career as an actor before honing her talents as an artistic leader, diversity specialist and change maker for some of the country’s most prolific companies and organisations including Sydney Theatre Company (as Directing Associate and Richard Wherrett Fellow), Belvoir and Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (as Artistic Associate). Courtney was previously Chair of the Equity Diversity Committee, a delegate to the National Performers Committee, and a former board member for Contemporary Asian Australian Performance. Courtney’s production of The Poison of Polygamy by Anchuli Felicia King premiered at La Boite in May this year and had a subsequent season at Sydney Theatre Company. Courtney’s production of Miss Peony opened at Belvoir in July and is currently touring nationally. Courtney was recently appointed to the Board for Creative Australia.
  • Matthew Lutton

    Matthew Lutton is Malthouse Theatre’s Artistic Director and Co-CEO. Prior to this, he was Malthouse Theatre’s Associate Director, Associate Director at Black Swan State Theatre Company, and Artistic Director of the Perth based independent company, ThinIce. Directing credits for Malthouse Theatre include: Macbeth (An Undoing), Hour of the Wolf, Because the Night, Solaris (Lyric Hammersmith London, Royal Lyceum Edinburgh), Cloudstreet, Melancholia, Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets, The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man, Away, Edward II, Picnic at Hanging Rock (Barbican London, Royal Lyceum Edinburgh), Night on Bald Mountain, The Bloody Chamber, Dance of Death, Pompeii, L.A., On the Misconception of Oedipus, and Tartuffe. For Sydney Theatre Company he has directed The Trial, The Mysteries: Genesis, and The Duel. Other directing credits include: Love Me Tender for Belvoir Theatre and Don’t Say the Words for Griffin Theatre Company. His opera directing credits include: Make No Noise for the Bavarian State Opera, Strauss’ Elektra for Opera Australia and West Australian Opera, and Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman for New Zealand Opera.
  • Veronica Neave

    Veronica has worked extensively as an Actor, Dramaturge, Writer, Director and Physical Performer throughout Australia over the last 35 years, performing in major roles for all state theatre companies including over 33 shows for Queensland Theatre Company alone. For ten years Veronica collaborated with Kate Champion’s company, Force Majeure, performing/devising. Veronica has directed/devised and written shows for NIDA, The Australian Theatre for Young People and the Queensland Theatre Company. Veronica co-produced and wrote the ABC documentary Pieces Of Me and is a published author with a book of the same title. For three years Veronica held the position of Artistic Director of the Vulcana Women’s Circus. In 2019 Veronica completed her Churchill Fellowship specializing in Shakespeare’s verse. Veronica is now a Producer at the Brisbane Powerhouse. She has been a member of MEAA since 1988 and is on ehte National Performers Committee.
