Synopsis
-
12 April 2025
11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Come along to this three hour seminar and learn the 10(ish) things writers want actors to know. Laura’s experience as an actor and a writer gives her a unique perspective into how actors can, by really engaging with every aspect of the text, maximise their chances of getting a role, and nailing the performance. Peppered with tips garnered over years of working on both sides of the camera, this seminar will help young actors see that writers are actually trying to help them! There will also be time to pick Laura’s brains about the ins and outs of working on Shortland Street, approaching audition scripts, and making the move from acting to writing.

Laura Hill
Laura has been an actor/writer for 25+ years. She studied Theatre & Film at Victoria University Wellington and has performed at every professional theatre in the country. She was core cast on Shortland Street for seven years, during which time she also wrote dialogue scripts under a pseudonym. After seven years freelancing she returned to Shortland Street as a storyliner before becoming a script editor and eventually, in her last year, co-Head Writer overseeing script production, under Oliver Driver as Producer. Laura has also been on story tables for Go Girls, The Almighty Johnsons, Nothing Trivial and 800 Words, working with James Griffin, Kate McDermott, Rachel Lang and Gavin Strawhan. She has made guest appearances on shows such at Westside, Go Girls, Nothing Trivial and The Brokenwood Mysteries. Since leaving Shortland Street in 2023, she has written scripts for The Brokenwood Mysteries (with Roy Ward) and returned to the stage and screen - mostly playing lawyers, your Honour.
