This will be your chance to hear for new Performing Arts Graduates to hear from Equity’s National Industrial Officers Tess Chappell and Miles Hunt on performers’ employment contracts, usage payments and residuals. Please note: This event is at 11:30am AEDT (Sydney/Melbourne time) and 1:30pm NZ time. You will be sent a Zoom link to tune in.
The discussion will cover the following topics:
- Contract basics, how to negotiate an employment contract before signing and how to use your contract during your employment.
- Usage – upfront buyouts and the curse of in perpetuity.
- Residuals – backend payments and where they come from;
- Agreements – how usage and residuals work in film, TV and streaming;
- MEAA negotiations and payments for performers;
- Commercials and rollovers
- The difficulty with streamers; and
- International Perspective – SAG and other jurisdictions and Q and A
Host(s)

Tess Chappell
Tess Chappell is a National Industrial Officer in Equity at MEAA, providing advice to and advocating for performers in the live performance industry. Tess joined MEAA after working for over 4 years as plaintiff employment lawyer. Prior to legal practice, Tess completed a Bachelor of Performing Arts and was involved in the Melbourne independent theatre community as a production manager and stage manager.
Miles Hunt
Miles Hunt is a National Industrial Officer working within Equity at MEAA. He deals with industrial issues for members (individually and collectively) and negotiates agreements (for film and TV) on behalf of members. He was a Personal Injury Lawyer for 10 years and has been working in screen at MEAA for the last 6 years. He is currently negotiating the screen agreements with Screen producers Australia while helping to deal with the threat of AI in our industry.
