Synopsis

Equity's Live Stream Program continues with Equity New Zealand President and New Zealander of the Year, Jennifer Ward-Lealand,  interviewing actor Sam Neill. It’s a chance to discuss Sam's life, career - past and current projects and what he has learnt along the way. Internationally-recognised for his contribution to film and television, Sam Neill has more than 75 films and over 45 television programs to his credit. He is a passionate supporter of many environmental and social justice causes and has been a proud union member since joining Equity in 1979. Sam made his film debut in Roger Donaldson’s Sleeping Dogs and his feature breakthrough in a starring role opposite Judy Davis in My Brilliant Career. The two films that subsequently brought him international stardom and acclaim were writer/director Jane Campion’s The Piano and Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. In 2016 he starred in the New Zealand-made film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, directed by Taika Waititi. Recent features include Sweet Country, Ride Like a Girl and Palm Beach. His work in television inlcudes Reilly, Ace of Spies, Merlin , The Tudors , Crusoe, Happy Town, Alcatraz, Peaky Blinders and ITV miniseries Tutankhamun. He has also presented and narrated several documentaries. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Equity New Zealand Lifetime Achievement Award, Presented by Ryman Helathcare.     Since training at Auckland’s Theatre Corporate, Jennifer has worked extensively in theatre, film, television, musical and radio for 40 years. She is also a trained Intimacy Coordinator for stage and screen. Jennifer was a founding board member of the Watershed Theatre and a co-founder of the drama school, The Actors' Program. She is President of Equity New Zealand (since 2008), Patron of Q Theatre and Theatre New Zealand and serves as a trust board member of the Actors Benevolent Fund. In the 2007 New Year’s Honours List, she was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to theatre and the community. In 2018 she was named SPADA Industry Champion and in 2019 New Year’s Honours List, she was named a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to theatre, film and television and presented with a Woman of Influence Award (for arts and culture) Most recently, Jennifer was honoured as the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2020. www.jenniferwardlealand.com
