This is a chance to talk to Scott Williams, Artistic Director of UK’s Impulse Theatre Company, and Equity member John Batchelor about acting in the 21 Century. Topics include:
- actor training changes in last 40 years;
- changes in approaches to acting and working professionals;
- how the pandemic has changed the way we work, learn and communicate;
- an update on the London and New York theatre landscape and actor training and their work ethic and commitment to ongoing training;
- the “Meisner Technique” is taught differently all over the world – Scott and John will talk about the importance of a reliable technique and approach.
Please note: this class will take place at 4pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) which is NSW/VIC/QLD/TAS Time. And 6pm New Zealand Time. You will be sent a Zoom link the day before and again the day off the livestream to tune in.

Scott Williams
SCOTT WILLIAMS founded The Impulse Company shortly after his arrival in London in 1996. He has directed and taught all over the world, most recently at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (Measure for Measure), New York Stage and Film (Painted From Memory), and in Hong Kong (Ancient History and A Streetcar Named Desire). In London, he has directed dozens of plays, including Five O'Clock Angel (with Nichola McAuliffe), which had a six-month tour throughout the UK. Scott is moving The Impulse Company into international work, with the creation of Impulse Company France in Paris, as well as regular stops in Australia, New York, and Hong Kong, among other places. He trained with Sanford Meisner at Neighborhood Playhouse and with William Ball at American Conservatory Theatre, and has advanced degrees from San Francisco State University.
John Batchelor
John Batchelor is a familiar face to Australian audiences following his 5 season stint on Sea Patrol as ‘Charge’ and as the larger than life character Peeto in the AACTA winning film Red Dog.John’s feature film highlights include the Chinese/Australian feature The Whistleblower, The Tenderhook, Chasing Comets, Walt Disney Pictures’ Inspector Gadget 2, Danny Deckchair, Peter Rabbit 2.In addition to Sea Patrol, John’s television highlights include Barons, Underbelly: Razor as Kate Leigh’s underworld ‘right hand man’ Wally Tomlinson; The Great Mint Swindle (Tony Lewandowski), Brock (Larry Perkins), Harrow (Clayton Pike), The Secret Daughter (Nick Mackay), Home and Away (Winston Markman) and Devil’s Dust (Jack Rush QC)However, John’s first love is the stage and there he has enjoyed such productions including: Peter and the Starcatcher” produced by Dead Puppet Society, The Odd Couple – Crossroads Live, Storm Boy - MTC, The Way of the World, Festen and Top Coat - STC, The Underpants – Company B, Holding Achilles (World Premiere) – Dead Puppets Society/Legs on the Wall, Antony and Cleopatra, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Troilus + Cressida, Julius Caesar – Bell Shakespeare, Christmas at Turkey Beach, Oz Shorts and Managing Carmen (World Premiere)- QTC. His 5 years working in Brisbane also gained him 2 Matilda Awards for his work in Queensland Theatre.
