3 September 2022 - 4 September 2022
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
The ability to producing an authentic and consistent sound, one that lives easily in your body, is integrated into your character and is appropriate for style and period, is an essential skill for any actor. This workshop is based on the methodology of Knight Thompson Speechwork, a skills-based approach that focuses on the actor’s awareness of the precise physical actions and the “vocal posture” of different dialects in addition to the inflection patterns and rhythm. Using some sample dialects (including American) we will explore the process of acquiring a speech pattern different from your own. (There will also be an opportunity to focus on a dialect that is of particular interest to you.) Participants will not only become familiar with the dialects studied, and practiced during the workshop, but will acquire the skills to be able to research and develop a dialect independently. Note: this is a two day workshop, it is essential that you can commit to attending both days.

I have over 20 years of experience coaching a huge range of accents for film and stage. I have coached actors individually for auditions and role preparation and also served as the dialect coach for productions, on set and for ADR.I am interested in how actors learn and in developing a coaching style that works for the particular actor I’m working with. I’m also a voice teacher for actors so, depending on production needs, I’m also frequently working with actors on vocal delivery and characterization as well as dialect.I serve as a vocal, text and dialect coach for American Players Theatre (STONES IN HIS POCKETS, AN IMPROBABLE FICTION, A DOLL’S HOUSE and OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD). I have also coached dialects for Tuacahn Center for the Arts (THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, MATILDA THE MUSICAL, SHREK, MARY POPPINS and MY FAIR LADY), Utah Shakespeare Festival, (credits include TWO GENTLEMEN of VERONA, BOEING, BOEING and SHERLOCK HOLMES), Pioneer Theatre Company (including CHARLES III and DRACULA), Salt Lake Acting Company (over 20 productions including HAND TO GOD, TRIBES, GOOD PEOPLE, ANGELS IN AMERICA) and Lyric Repertory Company (including PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, THE FOREIGNER). Film and TV includes GALYNTINE (AMC pilot) and THE SAVING OF SARAH CAIN. I am a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).
