Narrating Audio Books in Australia: Behind the Scenes with Jodie Harris (Part 1)

Australian actor and audio book producer Jodie Harris will host two livestreams (Sept 4 & 11).  Part one "Behind the Scenes" is a general introduction and will look and what goes on behind the scenes. Part two "Behind the Mic" will involve actor participation (please apply separately). Narrating an audiobook from a home studio can bring a solid, stable source of income but requires an understanding of the specific tech requirements for audiobook narration. We’ll cover what you need to know to be confident in your ability to deliver audio files to the standard expected by international producers. This first session (Sept 4) will focus on the following:

• How the Australian and American audiobook industries operate and how they work differently - including how actors are cast.
• Tech expectation for home-recording, and what you need to know to set up or adjust your existing recording studio.
• How having an online presence, networking and connection with the community is key for creating work opportunities.
• Helpful memberships and resources to advance your career

Audiobooks are the largest growing arm of publishing, with an expected worldwide growth rate of over 10% annually for the next 5 years. In the US, the Big 5 outsource production to smaller companies to keep up with demand and these companies also produce for smaller publishing houses as well as independent authors. The majority of titles are recorded by narrators with home studios all around the world. Publishers and producers predominantly discover narrators through casting databases, online searches and word-of-mouth referrals. If they can’t find samples of your work and how to contact you, they can’t hire you! The audiobook community is incredibly welcoming and supportive – learn simple ways to have an online presence and connect to the people who hire you.  Q and A will follow.
