Synopsis

This second session "Behind the Mic" with Australian actor and audio book producer Jodie Harris on Sept 11 will take a deep dive into the performance of audiobook narration. Five actors will get a chance to perform a short 1-2 minute piece.  This will help cement what we’ve learnt together and set you up to create your own audiobook samples – an essential ‘asset’ to have to share with producers and publishers and help you book more work. Please apply here if you wish to be one of the five actors wanting to work with Jodie on your narration. Selection will be by ballot. The session will also cover the following:
  • Differences in narration styles for fiction and non-fiction, genre expectations, character voices, accents, POV styles and other creative choices.
  • More than just recording: what else is expected outside of the studio, including preparation, collaboration and post-production.
  • Audiobook specific coaches – where to find them/how to access workshops.
  • Rates, and how they vary across regions.
Audiobooks are the largest growing arm of publishing, with an expected worldwide growth rate of over 10% annually for the next 5 years. In the US, the Big 5 outsource production to smaller companies to keep up with demand and these companies also produce for smaller publishing houses as well as independent authors. The majority of titles are recorded by narrators with home studios all around the world. Narrating an audiobook from a home studio can bring a solid, stable source of income but, being predominantly self-directed, having a deep understanding of the performance requirements for audiobook narration is essential. We’ll cover what you need to know to be confident in your ability to deliver a performance to the standard expected by international producers.  Q and A to follow. Please note: We recommend you register to attend both livestreams although this is not compulsory.  You will need to register for each session separately. This class will take place online at 12pm AEST and 2pm NZ time.
