Synopsis
Would you like to better understand how a film set works and how actors collaborate with the script supervisor? The script supervisor is crucial on set for maintaining continuity between shots and scenes, ensuring the final product can be seamlessly edited into a coherent story. They oversee the technical, creative, and record-keeping notes of a project and they are the intermediary that connects the production to the postproduction world. Join Script Supervisor Katharina Keil and Equity member Sophia Emberson-Bain as they share Katharina's insights into her role, how she works with actors, and what you need to know about on-set protocols—so you can feel confident and prepared when you step on set. Katharina Keil
With more than 30 years in the industry, Katharina Keil has established herself as one of Australia’s most experienced Script Supervisors, trusted across major international blockbusters, beloved local features, and acclaimed television dramas. Her credits include Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2nd Unit with Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Sir Ben Kingsley, Michelle Yeoh and an ensemble of international stars), Jocelyn Moorhouse’s The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet, the Australian classic Looking for Alibrandi directed by Kate Woods, the US production Kangaroo Jack, StudioCanal’s recently released Kangaroo, and the upcoming thriller Apex starring Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana. She also worked on the 2024 Australian feature Runt, based on Craig Silvey’s bestselling novel. On television, Katharina’s work spans landmark series such as Underbelly, Puberty Blues, House of Gods, Wellmania, Total Control, Bump, and Amazon’s The Wilds. Alongside her extensive script supervising career, Katharina is also an award-winning director and writer. Her short films Waves and Opa-Pappou have screened internationally, earning accolades including Best Director at the Brussels Film Festival and recognition at the Cannes World Film Festival. Renowned for her precision and collaborative spirit, Katharina is passionate about safeguarding both story and performance. Her eye for detail allows actors the freedom to focus fully on their craft, knowing that the emotional and visual continuity of their work is in safe hands. -
Sophia Emberson-Bain
Sophia joined MEAA in 2008, and served as a Section Delegate before going on to be Vice President of Queensland Equity. Sophia grew up in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. She went to school in England before moving to Australia at the age of 12. In 2007, Sophia graduated from both the Actors Conservatory and the Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane where she completed an Advanced Diploma in Stage and Screen, and Jazz Improvisation respectively. She then went on to study a Bachelor of Laws degree at QUT. Sophia continues to balance her legal career with her acting. Sophia’s various high-profile film and television projects include Barrumbi Kids, which has been recognised as Children’s Production of the Year at the 2023 Screen Producers Awards; NBC's Joe vs Carole; Harrow; Darby and Joan; Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire; Aquaman and Foxtel's critically acclaimed The End. She has also worked on stage with La Boite Theatre in Closer and Prize Fighter, and with Queensland Theatre in School of The Arts. In 2020 & 2021 she produced the Northern Territory's first dedicated online news talkshow called The NT Recap.
